It seems a little strange that Cid wouldn't have heard of the friends of a friend, but Crystallis was a pretty big wake-up call for Ven regarding the size and complexity of some worlds; it's possible the matter just didn't come up, right?

They both inspired Cloud to join, it sounds like." As for what they're like, Ven has to consider that a moment more. "Zack's a really good guy! And a great fighter. I don't know Sephiroth very well, but he seems nice enough. He's really good in a fight, too."
Cid may not have asked about their fighting skills, but in Ven's defense it's simple habit to include his impression of their abilities in with their personalities.
